Located on the east bank of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, Expo Village Plot B carries the memories of Expo 2010. The design retains the existing urban fabrics and facades of Shanghai Expo Village, while taking advantage of the greenery between buildings and public landscape resources. The result is an ecological, green residential development that exudes a sense of timeless charm and modernism.
One of the key strengths of this design is the creation of order in terms of spaces, light, and structures. By integrating a series of spaces that vary with light and structures, the residential development offers future dwellers better sensory experiences. Additionally, the design adopts distinctive architectural design languages and fuses cultural and artistic elements into the structural order, giving the development a tranquil and elegant image.
The facade design of Expo Village Plot B is both rigorous and modern, echoing the fabrics of the existing buildings in the Expo Village. The use of glass and aluminum panels as main materials creates a lightweight visual effect, while the modular facade design helps lighten the sense of volume and unify architectural expressions. The incorporation of glass and balconies allows for abundant fresh air, sunlight, and river views, enhancing the overall living experience.
Organized around the plot, the buildings form a lower west skyline and a higher east one, generating a continuous and complete urban surface. The design also features a multi-layered greening layout within the future community, with private spaces appropriately divided between public spaces and residential building clusters. The height differences of various layers of space are utilized to enclose a garden-like livable community, creating a harmonious and inviting environment.
The design of Expo Village Plot B prioritizes the dwellers' homecoming experience, aiming to create a tranquil and elegant living environment. The spatial design incorporates drop-off courtyards enclosed by plants and waterscapes, landscape corridors that connect different areas, and sunken courtyards accessed via stairs. This spatial order, combining openness and closeness, stimulates dwellers' emotions and creates a quiet and exquisite vibe with multiple layers.
Started in 2019 and completed in 2022, Expo Village Plot B is located in South Pier Street, Pudong New District, Shanghai, China. The design project faced the challenge of incorporating the "memories of Expo 2010" carried by the land, which was exclusive to Shanghai and those who witnessed the success of Expo 2010. The core issue was to create a modern living environment, establish a distinctive urban outline, and make full use of the beautiful view of the Huangpu River. Through innovative design ideas and techniques, the project successfully achieved these goals.
Expo Village Plot B by Shanghai Huayuan Industrial Co., Ltd. is a testament to the possibilities of creating a modern residential community while retaining the historical significance of a site. By combining new design ideas and techniques with the existing fabrics and surfaces of Shanghai Expo Village, the development offers an ecological, green, scale-friendly, and natural residential community that seamlessly blends timeless charm with modernism.
